World Turned Upside Down Video

Back in January 2006 MCIN hosted the “Our Stories in Our Language” event in central Manchester to launch a series of videos made by Deaf people from across Greater Manchester.

As a follow on from this event MCIN worked with Community Pride on a School of Participation project. This project used video as a way of highlighting the barriers faced by Deaf people seeking employment.

This video was launched on 27th November 2006. You can watch the video below. If you would like a DVD of the video contact David Kay at MCIN.

Genie Project

In this video Denise Pepper talks to Claire Johnson about the Genie Project in Trafford.

Using both BSL (British Sign Language) and a voice over (by a proffesional interpreter) the video highlights the history and work of the Genie Project and is accessible for both Deaf BSL users and their hearing parents, family and friends.

Doctor’s waiting rooms.

I have been working with Deaf people from across Greater Manchester using video as a way of telling their stories and getting their stories online.

You can find examples of videos created as part of these initial sessions on the Video section of the Manchester Deaf Gateway website.
Video is an ideal medium as many Deaf people’s first language is BSL (British Sign Language) a visual form of communication.

Following up the initial sessions, in April/ May 2006 I did some follow up work with Trafford Deaf Community Network. In these sessions the focus was on dealing with an issue/ topic.

In this video the topic is the problem faced by deaf people in doctor’s waiting rooms and the video offers a simple yet effective solution (one already employed by some doctors and health centres across the region).
